Is It Too Late to Switch to a CS Major?

Before I go into my experience being a computer science major and how I went about my struggles, I want to begin by congratulating you on a great career choice. Not only is a career in computer science vigorous and impressive, it can also be quite adventurous. I went through a tough time debating whether or not I was in the right field and whether or not I was starting the journey too late compared to others. As someone who didn’t take any CS courses or learn any languages before college, I felt like I was at a disadvantage from the start. I was surrounded by people who had been doing this since before middle school and had known that this was the career path they wanted to take for a much longer time than I had. However, I think a universal rule of thumb is to remember that you are never alone. There are so many people who feel exactly the same way as you do even if it doesn't seem like it. CS can feel like an incredibly competitive and demanding major but the end result is definitely worth it.

After taking enough classes to reassure myself that I was passionate about what I wanted to do, my next step was to give myself advantages that I didn’t previously have. Whether this is learning a new language on my own time, or getting certified in different computer science related courses (which can all be done online for FREE and I’ll link some below:) ), I spent a good chunk of time building my resume and my knowledge to set myself apart from others and set myself up for success.

Another important detail I wish I realized sooner is to involve yourself in clubs and extracurricular activities that are related to your major. It is such a nice and easy way to connect with others who have similar interests. This helps you build connections, learn from others, and surround yourself with people who most likely are in the same position as you.

As long as you know that you are passionate about what you do and set your mind to it, you can do it. Don’t get discouraged and keep pushing yourself. Your college experience is what you make of it and although your experience may not be similar to mine I hope that this at least helps you with a step in the right direction. :)
