Tech Can Take You Anywhere!

I recently spoke with some distant family members about my goals and career path. I told them I was majoring in information and computer science and that I currently worked at a Venture Capital firm based in Birmingham, MI. The latter took them by surprise. Despite my highly technical degree, I was really interested in finance and start-up culture. The truth is my very technical degree really actually helped me attain my non-traditional career path. The truth is tech can take you anywhere.

As women in computer science, we should feel empowered by the many options available to us. It’s okay to explore, it’s okay to change your mind, and it’s helpful to know that your background in tech will be useful, needed and appreciated in any career sector. Throughout my tenure at the University of Michigan, I’ve seen friends and mentors from all fields of engineering pursue really eclectic and diverse career paths. I have one friend in aerospace engineering who now works as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. Another majored in Material Science and ended up starting their own consulting firm.

The world is yours to create! I believe that a tech-centered degree is one of the most versatile paths anyone can go down.

With the increasing demand for technology in almost every industry, having a strong technical foundation can open doors to a vast array of opportunities and help you make a significant impact in the world. Whether you are interested in entrepreneurship, finance, healthcare, or any other field, a tech-centered degree equips you with problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to innovate, which are highly valued skills in today's job market. So, don't limit yourself to traditional career paths, explore your options, follow your passion, and trust that your tech background will be a valuable asset in your journey towards achieving your goals.
